Organizing 101: Garages by Kathleen Dore (Article Source:

Take your garage from a disorganized mess to a clean multifunctional space you'll enjoy using with these organizing tips.
Wow, I thought, when I saw photos of Bill West's garage. Bikes and gardening
tools hung on panelled walls, storage containers lined shelves, and the floor
and walls were white. I thought about the clutter in my garage and decided to
talk to the Colorado-based real estate agent and member of the National
Association of Professional Organizers. Here's Bill's nine-step system for
creating a "clean, functional and organized garage," which is also presented in
his book, Your Garagenous Zone: Innovative Ideas for the Garage (Paragon Garage
Company, $31), due out in September. (For details, visit garagez.com.)

Debbie Travis' House to Home column (extract)
Organization and storage solutions have become big business. Products designed for an outdoor workroom or garage must be tough. In areas of North America where climate changes are extreme, materials must be able to tolerate very cold and hot temperatures without cracking or buckling. I came across a system of modular steel cabinets that have both the modern design and practical elements to transform any cluttered, overstuffed garage.
Units are sold separately so you can add storage as your needs change and grow. Drawers and shelves are designed to hold heavy tools and garden equipment. Wall systems keep everything off the floor. Another design caught my eye. This modular system is made from resin. Moulded in two tones with curved detailing, there are cabinets, shelf units and floor boxes designed to fit together just as the steel cabinets do.

"The garage tends to become a catch-all space for extra stuff, but the time and thought you put into organizing it is an excellent investment. You walk through this space every day on your way to your car, so garage clutter is an inconvenience, and a possible source of danger. "

Metamorphosis of the garage
Trends; Today's fancy garages house complete spas and pricey sports cars Pedro Arrais, CanWest News Service Published: Saturday, January 12, 2008 There was a time when the garage was used solely to park a car. Nowadays, the space serves multiple purposes --from a place to store sports equipment and gardening tools to a home spa and gym.

"To some, a garage is much more than a place to park the car and store junk. To
the car enthusiast it is a nerve center with a lift, a wash and wax station, and cabinetry for an extensive supply of tools; to the carpenter it is a woodworking shop with a table saw, a ventilation system, and workbenches to detail out the latest project. It is a place for the guys to hang out. It is the tool type's equivalent of a gourmet kitchen."

Garage Facelift
November/December 2007 Edition
By: Sophie Kneisel

It used to be all about size when it came to garages. Now, it's more about what's inside and how it's hanging up.
Since the garage is the main entry point to 75% of American homes (and that percentage is no doubt higher in Canada, given our colder climate), the surprise is not that the garage "organization" business and the trend towards fully finished interiors is growing rapidly, but why it didn't happen sooner...
Alec Williams, one of the owners of Hammer Homes in Calgary, says storage is always an issue when building a house. "We generally customize garage shelving and hanging space to what the client needs," he says. "When we design a garage, we make it oversize whenever possible." But size isn't everything anymore: finishings are becoming increasingly important too.
"People want the inside of their garages to look as good as their houses," says Gary Morse, of Gary Morse Construction Inc. near Kentville, Nova Scotia...
...Prefabricated PVC wall panels help homeowners create a dynamic system that changes with their needs. As one retailer puts it: "Do it once, and do it right. (These panels mean) the garage works around you instead of vice versa."...
...With most of these systems, cabinetry is hung several inches off the floor, preventing moisture damage on the bottom of the cabinets and making it possible to clean underneath them.
A few other ideas for customers who want to "clear the floor:" ...slat wall systems with hooks, baskets, and other accessories offer a multitude of ways to keep belongings safe, tidy and, best of all, off the garage floor. |
